Summer is easing into autumn, and when it comes to seasonal style and trending hairstyles, there’s one word on everyone’s lips: accessories. Hair accessories have been dominating the catwalks this year and look set to be at the centre of various trends in hair and beauty as 2024 draws to a close.

There’s never been a better time to get creative and experiment with accessories, whether you want to stay on trend or you’re just looking out for some great presents for friends. From headbands to hair clips, we take a look at which accessories will help you tap into the biggest hair trends of the moment.

Autumn hair trend no 1: the embellished ballerina bun

Ballerina buns are back, but this time it’s all about jazzing them up. The easiest way to inject some colour and personality into your bun is to invest in a range of hair clips and scrunchies that you can wear with your bun.

Try a pair of embellished sliding clips or snap clips in your bun – you could wear one on each side for subtle elegance, or two next to each other for more drama. And don’t be afraid to mix and match colours, textures and patterns – this season is all about being bold and creative.

Hair scrunchies are also big this autumn, and there are so many to pick from. Choose one in a bold colour or retro block pattern to pop around your bun for maximum impact.

Autumn hair trend no 2:  slicked-back hair

The sleek, slicked-back look is staying with us for another season, which is great news for anyone who likes to keep their hair away from their face. It’s also a brilliant opportunity to experiment with accessories, as a way to add variety and personality to your hairstyles.

If you’re a fan of the slicked-back pony, soften the look with a pretty pony-tail scrunchie – you’ll be tapping into the hair bow trend at the same time. Or for a more polished, put-together look, go for a barrette hair clip.

For an effortlessly elegant look, you can’t beat hair swept back into a chic chignon. Secure it using a claw clip in an on-trend marble, quartz or tortoiseshell pattern.

Autumn hair trend no 3: headbands and headscarves

Headbands are going to be everywhere this season, and not only do they look incredibly elegant, they’re handy for keeping hair off your face too. A soft, wide headband can elevate any outfit, and is especially handy for second or third-day hair as it’ll disguise any slightly greasy roots. Pick from plain and preppy or floral and feminine styles.

Knotted headbands don’t look set to dip in their popularity any time soon, and it’s a great idea to have a few different ones on hand, so you can add a touch of elegance to any outfit and occasion. Velvet in a warm autumnal rust or a rich jewel tone like aubergine or is an instant look-lifter, and works particularly well during the festive season.

Prefer a more retro or boho vibe? Patterned headscarves offer a stylish nod to the 60s and are right back in style this season. Tie the tails into an eye-catching bow or let them trail for an effortless effect.
